Bicycling for Ladies by Maria E. Ward
Published in 1896, Maria E. Ward’s Bicycling for Ladies is far more than a Victorian cycling manual. It's a guide to liberation on two wheels. Women had begun riding bicycles in significant numbers only in the 1890s, challenging conventions about where they could go, what they could wear, and how freely they could move. With practical advice on riding, repair, clothing, and etiquette (and photographs attributed in part to pioneering photographer Alice Austen!) the book captures a radical cultural shift in motion: the bicycle becoming a vehicle not simply for transportation, but for female independence.
