Found Object No.0048.26 New Orleans, Cherry by Mary Karr
Cherry by Mary Karr (2000)
In the oil-refinery towns of East Texas, a fiercely intelligent, restless girl hurtles toward adolescence with a hunger for experience and an instinct for self-destruction. Against a backdrop of family dysfunction, sexual awakening, drugs, and the turbulent 1960s, Mary Karr recounts her teenage years with savage wit and startling tenderness. A memoir about the dangerous exhilaration of growing up, the ache of wanting to belong, and the desperate search for a self beyond the wreckage of childhood.
Karr wrote Cherry as the sequel to her acclaimed memoir The Liars’ Club. Its title refers to both her childhood nickname and the sexual innocence she navigates throughout the book. Karr later completed her autobiographical trilogy with Lit (2009), tracing her journey through alcoholism, motherhood, and recovery.
