The Living by Annie Dillard

1992 first edition, first printing.

In the wild, unforgiving Pacific Northwest of the 1850s, settlers arrive on the shores of Bellingham Bay determined to carve civilization from the wilderness. Among them are a man haunted by murder, an orphan searching for purpose, and women whose endurance holds fragile communities together. As forests fall, fortunes rise, and violence erupts, Dillard constructs a sweeping, unsentimental portrait of frontier life, where survival is never guaranteed and the natural world remains indifferent to human ambition.

Best known for her Pulitzer Prize-winning Pilgrim at Tinker Creek, Dillard spent years researching the history of the Pacific Northwest for The Living, her first novel. She drew on historical accounts, pioneer diaries, and nineteenth-century language to recreate the lives of settlers with extraordinary period detail.
