The Boat — Nam Le (2008)
From the streets of Tehran to the slums of Colombia, the fishing villages of Australia to a refugee boat adrift in the South China Sea, Nam Le’s extraordinary debut collection follows seven lives caught at the intersection of violence, displacement, love, and survival. A young writer confronts his father’s traumatic past in Vietnam; a dying painter prepares to meet his estranged daughter; a teenage girl faces a terrifying journey across open water. Each story asks what it means to carry a history you cannot escape, and what remains of us when everything familiar is stripped away.
Born in Vietnam and raised in Australia, Nam Le was a lawyer before becoming a writer. His debut won the 2009 Dylan Thomas Prize and the Australian Prime Minister’s Literary Award for Fiction. The opening story, “Love and Honor and Pity and Pride and Compassion and Sacrifice,” playfully confronts the expectation that Vietnamese writers should mine their own war histories for literature.
