The Good Soldier: A Tale of Passion — Ford Madox Ford (1915)
Lovely Folio Society edition with slipcase.
Two seemingly respectable couples spend years together at a fashionable European spa, their lives bound by friendship, marriage, and a devastating web of adultery and deception. When the truth finally emerges, the unsuspecting American John Dowell attempts to reconstruct what happened, only to reveal how little he understood about the people closest to him.
Told through a famously unreliable narrator, The Good Soldier is a quietly devastating novel about desire, betrayal, and the terrible distance between what we believe and what is true.
Ford originally intended to call the novel The Saddest Story, but his publisher wanted a different title during World War I. Ford suggested The Good Soldier, reportedly as a joke, and the name stuck.
