THE STORY

LET IT BLEED is a portrait of Courtney Love in her most electric and raw element: intimate, uninhibited, and entirely herself.

On September 9, 2013, Courtney Love performed live at a small, unpublicized venue in New York City.

With almost no separation between performer and audience, Courtney revisited songs from her years with Hole and her solo career, bringing the same ferocity to a small room that had defined her performances on much larger stages. She blew cigarette smoke in my face as my lens nearly touched her body.

From the front row, I found myself witnessing something far removed from a traditional concert. No elaborate production. No carefully constructed spectacle. Just Courtney—acoustic, raspy, loud—her music and a room full of people who knew her.

She's wild. Always has been.

Her arm extends beyond the frame, revealing her Let It Bleed tattoo. The microphone cable stretches across her body as the musicians and stage lights recede into darkness. Her eyes are closed, lost in a performance that seems to unfold entirely on instinct.

I have photographed countless musicians throughout my career, but evenings like this are rare. I arrived as a photographer and found myself equally captivated as a fan.
