THE STORY
Driving long distances through rain, snow, and extreme weather conditions changes a person. There is a moment late at night when cities begin to dissolve, and you could be anywhere. There’s a rhythmic blur of lights, passing scenery, and thoughts.
Rain blurs the view through the glass; heat rises, adding a layer of fog between you and the cool night air.
In my thirties, I spent a great deal of time driving cross-country before leaving the U.S. for Africa. New York City had been my home base since I was 16, and the drive to California was both beautiful and daunting. I was in the early stages of building an entire program focused on teaching women and mothers affected by the violence of war to sew, helping them build skills and economic independence. I didn't know it at the time, but part of me would never leave Uganda, and the entire trajectory of my life and work would be impacted.
For this work, inks were allowed to move, pool and resist one another across the surface, with a fine dusting of mica powder adding a soft glow.
For me, Long Way Home lives somewhere between the longing for healing and the blurred goodbye to what was.
