THE STORY
Madonna has spent decades challenging convention, redefining popular culture and advocating for human rights. Her performances are legendary for their scale, making the opportunity to witness her in an intimate setting extraordinarily rare.
On September 24, 2013, I was among a small group at Gagosian Gallery in New York for the premiere of secretprojectrevolution, Madonna’s 17-minute film collaboration with photographer and director Steven Klein.
Sitting on the gallery floor just a few feet from her, I watched Madonna perform Elliott Smith’s haunting “Between the Bars,” kneeling and handcuffed between performers dressed as police officers. She adapted the lyrics to confront the prison-industrial complex. The performance came just 27 days before the tenth anniversary of Smith’s death, lending the moment an even deeper emotional weight.
Madonna spoke passionately about censorship, oppression and the suppression of artistic freedom around the world.
Stripped of the spectacle of her massive arena shows, she was raw, vulnerable and fiercely defiant. For someone whose work has reached hundreds of millions, this was an extraordinarily rare and personal moment.
I was close enough to witness every expression—and fortunate enough to preserve it.
