The Case Worker by George Konrád
Translated by Paul Aston
An unnamed child-welfare worker moves through a single day in Budapest confronting abandoned children, broken families, poverty, violence and lives that have been reduced to files on his desk. He has learned the professional necessity of detachment, until one case breaks through it. What follows is a bleak, startling novel about the impossible distance between administering compassion and actually living it, and what happens when a man charged with managing other people's suffering can no longer remain merely an observer.
Konrád himself spent seven years working in child welfare in Budapest, and those experiences became the foundation for The Case Worker, his first novel, originally published in Hungary in 1969.
