THE STORY

Photographed in the vast, red sands of Wadi Rum in Jordan, as the desert evening light began to fall, The Crossing captures a Bedouin camel rider moving alone across the vast landscape, dust rising beneath the camel’s feet and catching the last light of the day.

I was deeply drawn to both the beauty and resilience of camels, and the bond they share with their handlers. Their ability to survive long distances with little water is extraordinary; their prehistoric appearance is breathtaking.

I’m drawn to moments like this—the ones that happen between destinations, when the landscape and the people moving through it simply exist. The scale of Wadi Rum makes the rider feel almost temporary against a landscape that has been there for thousands of years. It is that relationship between people and place that I continue to return to in my documentary work.
