The Story
I live for cold fall evenings in Upstate New York with my wife and our Presa, George. A cabin, a fireplace, warm light, darkness, peace.
Even in winter, I prefer outdoor fire pits. I tend to our fires until barely a flame remains and the sky is pitch black.
Long after the flames have dwindled, the last of their heat remains.
I created this painting thinking of those winter fires. I recalled the smoky, chilled air as I blended black, burnt umber, copper and metallic gold. The pigments moved across the canvas, breaking apart and settling into a surface that feels scorched, weathered and still alive with warmth.
Fractures of gold emerged from the darkness. Small traces of red remain, almost like embers refusing to disappear.
THE LAST HEAT explores the moment after the fire settles—when its intensity has passed, the fire pit has changed, the wood is charred, and something beautiful still remains.
