THE STORY

Wildlife in the Serengeti exists on the narrow cusp of life and death; fullness and hunger. Observing a wild lion from just a few feet away reveals both his majestic power and his extraordinary vulnerability. A portrait of strength, The Last of the Pride is also a reflection on what remains as the natural world faces increasing threats.

It was late in the evening, and the lone lion was camouflaged in the golden grass. He was fully stretched out, yawning; his stomach full and distended. Traces of blood remained on his paws as he licked them slowly, unhurried, satisfied, and entirely at ease in the fading African light.

For a brief moment, he existed somewhere between stillness and movement. It was this moment that became the foundation for “The Last of the Pride.”

In 2026, I printed the original photograph on canvas and transformed the piece through layers of alcohol ink. Burnt orange, deep crimson, black and metallic gold move across the canvas, partially concealing and revealing the lion beneath. The photograph becomes something closer to memory
— fragmented, layered and alive.

Part photograph, part painting, the work brings together two ways of seeing: the moment witnessed and the memory transformed.
