Flush: A Biography — Virginia Woolf (1933)
Born into the idyllic English countryside, Flush, a pampered cocker spaniel, finds his world transformed when he becomes the devoted companion of the poet Elizabeth Barrett. Confined to her London bedroom, he navigates jealousy, class distinctions, a terrifying kidnapping, and the arrival of Robert Browning, whose love threatens to displace him. When Elizabeth escapes her father's oppressive household for Italy, Flush discovers an intoxicating world of freedom. Told through the eyes and nose of a dog, Woolf's playful, unexpectedly moving biography explores love, captivity, privilege, and the exhilarating possibility of liberation.
Woolf based the novel on Elizabeth Barrett Browning's actual cocker spaniel, drawing on the poets' correspondence. The book's original illustrations were created by Vanessa Bell, Woolf's sister and fellow member of the Bloomsbury Group.
